The Christmas season seems to have the
ability to bring out the best in some people and the worst in others.
For many, the season is a time to go running into the aisles of the
malls and eat and drink to excess. We have forgotten that there is more
to Christmas than Santa Claus, football games and parties. It is a fact
that our country was founded as a Christian nation. I understand that
there are people that do not share that belief and I respect their right
to feel that way. They feel that the prosperity we enjoy is simply
because of human’s great intellect. They can express that belief without
fear, nor will someone force them to believe in the Christian belief
system. I believe that our founding fathers wanted everyone to have the
right to worship or not worship as they please. Among some of those
people we continue to hear calls to remove all aspects of God from our
culture. One such person is Michael Newdow.
You might remember in 2004 he challenged
the Pledge of Allegiance and its phrase "under God.” Newdow won that
lawsuit against the Pledge, later the Supreme Court tossed out his case
on a procedural technicality. Recently Mr. Newdow has filed another case
to remove the phrase “under God” from the pledge.
People like Michael Newdow
have achieved many victories. Many retailers put up the sign Happy
Holidays instead of Merry Christmas. Classical music with religious
names is banned at many graduation ceremonies. You might be wondering
why I included the word frogs in this week’s title. I have been told
that if you put a frog into a boiling pot of water he will jump out
immediately; on the other hand if you put him in the pot and gradually
raise the temperature he will allow himself to be boiled to death. It
makes we wonder if we Americans are kin to the frog. We are setting back
in the name of political correctness and allowing our heritage to be
replaced by the religion of atheism.
But there is some hope. I
recently read about a bill that has been filed in the Oklahoma state
legislature that would authorize Oklahomans to purchase license tags for
their vehicles displaying the national motto of “In God We Trust.”
Maybe we can prove we aren’t kin to the frog.
