THE CONSERVATIVE VIEW

BY RUSSELL TURNER

A YEAR OF PROMISES

The New Year has just begun and we have already had a good dose of political propaganda. The Iowa caucuses are over and the political strategists are beginning to earn their money. There will be huge amounts of money spent on political advertising this year; we will hear all kinds of jingles for various candidates and an endless parade of promises. It is a fact in politics that fundraising is an important part of campaigning. Often times the candidate that raises the most money has the better chance of winning the election. I believe that money raising should not be the most important qualification that a candidate possesses.

We Americans have a bad habit of forgetting what our country is all about. We have become a nation that has developed a love affair with socialism. Our country was founded to be a democratic republic, the only thing our system was supposed to do, as a democracy was to elect our leaders. The republic form of government is a government of absolutes values. For example, in a republic form of government murder is wrong and against the law, in a pure democracy if 50% plus 1 of the voters decide to make murder legal it will be legal. I do seriously doubt that civilized people would ever decide to make murder legal, but I hope that this example helps illustrate my point. Our founding fathers never intended for us to have a pure democracy. Throughout history democracies usually burn themselves out in about 200 years. A democracy works well until the voters discover that they can vote themselves some type of wealth from the public treasury, and electing people who will raid it for them causes it. Democracies usually fail because of bad financial planning.

Our system of government may not be perfect, but I believe that it is one of the best ever devised by man. The premise was so simple; we are guaranteed life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. As for myself, I look for the candidate that will use the power of government to protect those rights. It is not the government’s place to guarantee us a new car or a host of other things. So get ready for a year of promises, but remind yourself of the importance of government’s role in protecting our most precious asset “OUR FREEDOM”.
