THE CONSERVATIVE VIEW

BY RUSSELL TURNER

ARE THERE ANY ABSOLUTES?

This country was founded upon the Judao Christian belief system. At one time our leaders held those beliefs to be true, and because of that belief I feel that is the main reason we have prospered above all nations. The Christian belief system is not a violent religion. The option to accept or not to accept those beliefs is the choice of any individual.

In our system of government no one is forced to become a member of the Christian faith or any other faith. I feel that the founding fathers were very wise in the way they founded our government. But we also have the right of free speech and I feel that it is our right to express our beliefs in our places of worship. We have become so obsessed with political correctness that we may be silenced on behaviors that people of faith disagree with.

The U.S. Congress will soon be voting on H.R. 1592 the so-called hate crimes bill. The passage of H.R. 1592 will be a serious threat to freedom of religion and speech. It begins to lay the legal foundation and framework to investigate, prosecute and persecute pastors, business owners, and anyone else whose actions are based upon and reflect the truths found in the Bible regarding homosexuality. The bill was debated by the full House Judiciary Committee on April 25 and is expected to be voted on the House floor next Thursday, May 3rd or as early as Tuesday.

Some analysis’s feel that will make homosexual behaviors as well as cross-dressing, transvestism, and transsexualism into federally protected “minority” groups. After 10 hours of debate, amendments were voted down including protecting unborn children, the elderly, the military, police officers, pregnant women, and protecting religious freedom. H.R. 1592 was passed by the House Judiciary Committee by a 20-14 vote.

I feel that there are absolute truths in this world, but for what it is worth that is my belief. I also would not want to force anyone to believe as I do. I also believe that government and we citizens should be very careful about silencing the expression of religious doctrine.

All anyone has to do is watch the news about the nightly killing in our major cities. I do believe in one absolute truth. If we continue down the path we are on we better invest in security systems and prisons.
