THE CONSERVATIVE VIEW

BY RUSSELL TURNER

EASY FOR EASLEY

We humans sometimes become creatures of habit. We get into a habit of parking in the same spot every day, or we might want to set in the same place when we go to church or other functions. We become accustomed to using the same people to provide the services that we all need such as cutting our hair, repairing our autos, etc. When those people providing those services retire or move away we sometimes panic and wonder who we will get to fulfill our needs. We may have to do some research to find someone to replace them, but I have found that there is always someone else that can do the job. While most citizens understand this simple fact, some Oklahoma politicians seem to believe that they are the only ones that can run our state government.

State Senator Mary Easley wants to repeal term limits on state legislators. The people of Oklahoma voted to impose term limits on state legislators over a decade ago. The term limits have only kicked in over the past couple of election cycles. The people of Oklahoma spoke with a loud voice saying that they want a citizen government and not a capital building full of career politicians. In a recent Oklahoma poll over 80% of the respondents voted in favor of tem limits. Evidently it is easy for Senator Easley to become so self important that she feels that no one else can do the job she is doing. I cannot disagree more!

I have found that life is a lot like a baseball game. When a team is out on the field and you have your star pitcher on the mound, a good coach will always have another pitcher warming up. It would be foolish to solely rely upon one pitcher to play all the games in the season. Any number of things can happen to the star pitcher, it only makes sense to allow other pitchers to get into the game.

One thing that I have noticed about term limits, it forces the voter to become more involved in the political process. Instead of just voting for someone because they have seen their name on the ballot for many years, now we might have to do some research to do our duty as voters and pick the best candidate.
