WHO’S IN YOUR BACK YARD?

Over the past few weeks I have been listening to the news reports about the problem with prison overcrowding here in Oklahoma. For several years our prison system has been bursting at the seems. Many county jails routinely house state prisoners in their jails for a fee. I have read that we Oklahomans incarcerate a larger percentage of our citizens in comparison to other states. I recently read an article that should be of concern to we citizens of Oklahoma.

Since the 9/11 attacks our nation has declared a war on terrorists. In my opinion, the people and the ones that planned and executed the attack on the World Trade center have no remorse in killing as many of us as possible. How can we deal with someone and their perverted belief system? How can we make them value other people’s lives when they don’t even value their own?

Our nation has captured many of the terrorists across the world and has confined them at the Guantanamo Bay detention facility (located in Cuba). There is a plan in the US Congress to close the Guantanamo Bay prison and relocate the prisoners to facilities within the United States. Members of the House Armed Services Committee listed Fort Sill, Oklahoma as a potential relocation point for terror suspects held at Guantanamo Bay. There is one indisputable positive point in keeping the terrorists in Guantanamo. The prison is located in Cuba and it is a long way from the citizens of America. For the people that feel it is a good idea to bring them here in the mainland, I have a better idea. Maybe they should adopt some of these characters and take them into their homes and help them become better humans.

A prison is a place of confinement; I can see little difference for the prisoner whether he is in Cuba or in Fort Sill. But I can see a huge difference to the people who may live near those proposed relocation facilities. I know that there are some really bad people in Oklahoma prisons. But many others are convicted of nonviolent crimes. Most of the people from Guantanamo are intent upon killing Americans and destroying our way of life. I will end with a simple question. If a prison were in your back yard would you be more comfortable with offenders from our state or those from Guantanamo?
