SELECTIVE LAW ENFORCEMENT

Debate on illegal immigration seems to keep going like the energizer bunny. It is very clear that the American people want this issue resolved. While the debate is raging on, we should be enforcing the laws that are already have on the books. I had read that some senators who wanted to enforce our current laws were rejected outright, while those supporting amnesty seem to control the pace of the debate. The American people need to stay informed on the upcoming debate; it will directly affect their pocket books over the next several years.

Recently The Heritage Foundation assembled a panel of experts to look at legislation before the congress and the costs to the American taxpayer due to illegal immigration. Granting amnesty to illegal immigrants will eventually make them eligible for welfare, Social Security, Medicare and other government benefits. A preliminary estimate of the cost of amnesty to the taxpayer – a whopping $400,000 per person over the average lifespan and age of entry for the illegal immigrant. If our government approves amnesty, 12 million people are estimated to take this first step to becoming a protected member of the United States on some level. They will immediately be able to enjoy free emergency health care, free public education and free welfare programs for children.

It seems ironic that when our citizens want to visit another country our government has imposed several regulations to comply with. Our citizens must have a passport for travel even to Mexico and Canada. Due to a back-log of passport applications, the US Dept of Homeland Security has temporarily suspended that requirement but only if you have government issued ID (drivers license) and proof that you have already applied for a passport.

There is a host of laws that are being enforced. One is the seat belt law; we all have heard the expression of CLICK IT OR TICKET. Across the nation many states have a zero tolerance for not wearing a seat belt. Violating the seat belt law is a victimless crime, but it is enforced. There is one difference in enforcing the laws on American citizens verses the illegal aliens. We Americans will pay the fines involved while the illegals will not pay anything. They will be given a free trip to the border and turned loose. Maybe money is the deciding factor in what law is to be enforced or ignored.
